Die Orcas von Vancouver Island / The killer whales of Vancouver Island

An dieser Stelle möchte ich kurz über unsere Erlebnisse mit den Orcas von Vancouver Island berichten. Die Informationen haben keinen wissenschaftlichen Anspruch und beruhen auf unseren Erfahrungen vor Ort und den Berichten der Guides während der Reise (und ein wenig Wikipedia).

(Sorry, just school-english and translator but I tried my best...)  At this point I would like to briefly report on our experiences with the killer whales of Vancouver Island. The informations do not have a scientific claim and are based on our experience we made and on the reports of the guides during the trip (and a little Wikipedia).

Um die Insel herum gibt es im Prinzip zwei Typen von Schwertwalen, auch Orcas oder Killerwale genannt, bei denen sich die Wissenschaft noch nicht einig ist ob es verschiedene Unterarten sind oder nicht.

Around the island there are basically two types of killer whales or orcas, in which the science is not yet agreed whether there are different subspecies or not.

Bei der ersten Gruppe handelt es sich um „Mammal-eaters“, die sich insbesondere von anderen Meeressäugern, wie zum Beispiel Robben und Wale ernähren. Man nennt sie auch transient da sie nicht ortsgebunden und ständig an der Küste unterwegs sind.

The first group is called "Mammal-eaters" who feed on particularly other marine mammals such as seals and whales/dolphins. They are also called transient because they are not localized and are constantly traveling on the coast.

Die zweite Gruppe nennt sich „Coastal Fish-eaters”. Diese fressen, wie es der Name schon sagt, vorwiegend Fisch und hier natürlich am liebsten Lachs. Da sie sich immer in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung aufhalten nennt man sie auch resident.

The second group is called the "Coastal Fish-eaters". These eat, as it's name implies, primarily fish and of course prefer salmon. Because they always reside in their familiar surroundings they are also called resident.

Es gibt auch noch eine dritte Gruppe namens „Oceanic and Neritic Killer Whales” die weit draußen auf dem offenem Meer zu Hause sind und über die man nur wenig weiß. Diese kommen aber um Vancouver Island nicht vor.

There is also a third group called "Oceanic and neritic Killer Whales". They live out on the open sea and little is known about them. But these group do not appear to Vancouver Iceland.

Den transienten Typ konnten wir vor dem Örtchen Uculuet beobachten. Uns viel auf, und wurde uns auch bestätigt, das diese Unterart schnell und in kleinen Gruppen rund um Vancouver Island unterwegs ist. Auch ist bei ihnen die für Orcas bekannte Rückenflosse, auch dorsal fin genannt, nicht besonders groß.

The transient type we have seen close to the village Uculuet. It looked like, and that was confirmed to us, that this species moves very quickly and in smaller groups. Also the famed dorsal fin of these killer wales was very small.

Schwertwal, Killerwal bzw Transient Orca, Orcinus orca, Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Kanada Die Coastal Fish-eaters sind sehr viel relaxter und in deutlich größeren Gruppen unterwegs. Sie halten sich hier zwischen den Inseln an der Johnstone Strait auf, die Vancouver Island vom Festland trennt, und jagen Lachse die sich sammeln um die Flüsse hoch zu ziehen.

The Coastal Fish-eaters are much more relaxed and are traveling in larger groups. They stay around between the islands on the Johnstone Strait, which separates Vancouver Island from the mainland, There they are chasing the salmon which gather around before pulling up the rivers.

Bei unserer Tour von Telegraph Cove aus konnten wir eine Familie von 17 Tieren beobachten wie sie gemächlich durchs Wasser glitten. Besonders eindrucksvoll waren die mächtigen, mannshohen dorsal fins der Männchen. Sehr imposant war auch ihr Gesang, den wir über ein Unterwassermikrophon zu hören bekam.

On our trip from Telegraph Cove we watched a family of 17 animals gliding slowly through the water. Particularly impressive the mighty, man-sized dorsal fins of the males and also very impressive were their singing, we got to hear from an underwater microphone.

Schwertwale, Killerwale bzw Orcas Orcinus orca, Johnstone Strait, Broughton Archipelago, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Kanada Die Familien der hier ansässigen Orcas sind die wohl am besten untersuchten der Welt, da sich auf einer der Inseln eine wissenschaftliche Station befindet, die sich auf deren Erforschung konzentriert. Man fand heraus, dass die verschiedenen Schwertwaltypen eine Art unterschiedliche Sprache sprechen und sich nicht untereinander paaren.

The families of the resident orcas are probably the most studied in the world, because a scientific station is located on one of the islands, which focuses on their research. They found out that the different species of killer whales speak a different kind of language and do not mate with each other.

Zum Schluss noch eines. Bei Orcas in Gefangenschaft knickt die sonst steil aufragende dorsal fin einfach um. Warum? Man weiß es nicht. Aber sicher ein weiteres Indiz dafür das sich die intelligenten Tiere, aber auch Delfine in den Gefängnissen sogenannter Delfinarien oder Aquarien mit deren “Showeinlagen” nicht wohl fühlen. Darum sollte man von einem Besuch solcher Einrichtungen absehen damit diese nicht weiter unterstützt werden und so deren Geschäftsmodell ad absurdum führen.

Finally one thing. At Orcas in captivity the otherwise towering dorsal fin simply bends over. Why? We do not know. But sure, the intelligent animals, but also dolphins in the prisons of so called dolphinarium or aquariums with their "shows" does not feel comfortable. Therefore, we should refrain from visiting such institutions so that they are no longer supported and lead their business model ad absurdum.
